INTERIOR

Decorative painting is catching on in a big way

  • for homes, offices
  • rag rolling, stippling, sponging, crumpled paper, marbleizing, wood-graining, stenciling
  • contractors are increasing per-room revenue dramatically
  • do-it-yourselfers are using it more and more commonly
  • designer lines with specialized tools, coatings and videos are available at many home centers

Eggshell and satin paints are becoming popular, replacing flat paints for walls, ceilings, especially with residential re-do and commercial work.

True color schemes are growing in popularity, replacing white and off-white, and non-contrasting monochromatic color schemes.

Top of the line products are being specified more; and manufacturers are introducing new premium interior lines, some 100% acrylic

Low-odor paints are picking up in popularity

  • managers are specifying these more and more for offices, hotel rooms, school rooms, healthcare facilities, etc., in order to minimize downtime that can be prolonged by odor from conventional paints
  • many manufacturers have included low odor products in their line
  • these products generally have very low VOC (volatile organic compounds [solvents]) content, but low odor has been the main attraction among most users
  • some low odor paints have excellent sheen uniformity and touch-up properties related to the binders utilized

Use of latex products is continuing to increase relative to that of solvent based primers and gloss enamels

EXTERIOR

Residential and commercial property owners are increasing use of paint as an alternative to replacing aluminum siding, and to a lesser degree, vinyl siding

Satin house paints are growing more rapidly than are flat paints, for use on wall areas

Elastomeric wall coatings (EWCs) are gaining in popularity in much of the USA and are growing in Canada, for both residential and commercial building masonry surfaces

Latex primers and gloss trim paints are gaining acceptance among residential repaint professionals

Use of multiple-color schemes is increasing, particularly for larger, older homes
