Better Mildew Resistance

CHOOSE

HIGHER SHEEN PAINT
Re s e a rch shows that higher sheen paints tend to re s i s t m i l d ew better than flat paints because they are less poro u s than flat finishes. Po res in the s u rface of a flat finish can house d i rt that contains organic nutrients; porosity can also make it easier for surf a c e m i l d ew to gain access to nutrients in the surface that has been painted. Eggshell, satin or low lustre paint is somew h a t less porous than flat paints, semigloss paint has even less p o ro s i t y, while latex gloss paint is the least porous and most m i l d ew - resistant paint.

CHOOSE
LATEX PAINT
Latex paints tend to resist mildew better than oil-based or alkyd paints, since they generally contain less nutrient for mildew.

CHOOSE
QUALITY PAINT
Top quality exterior paints generally contain higher levels of mildewcide, an ingredient designed to fight mildew growth. Higher grades of latex paints are also less likely to contain the types of thickeners that can feed mildew.

Example of mildewTHE UNSIGHTLY BLACK, gray or dark brown areas or spots that sometimes appear on an exterior paint film may look like dirt, but they might be mildew— a type of fungus that needs nutrients in order to survive. Mildew can make a meal of just about anything, including: l nutrients in bare wood l dirt on top of the paint surface l oil in oil-based or alkyd paints l thickeners used in some latex coatings
